With the change of seasons comes the potential need to adjust your door’s striker plate. The striker plate is a metal appliance that is screwed onto the door jamb and features a long tongue extending outward. You may need to adjust your door’s striker plate if the latch is too tight, which you will notice if it is more difficult than usual to turn the doorknob, or if the door is not sealing properly. If left unaddressed, you run the risk of experiencing heat loss or unwanted moisture penetration.

The beauty of your striker plate is that you can adjust it very easily with one tool! All you’ll need is a Phillips screwdriver to adjust and secure your striker plate to keep your door functioning properly through the seasons. Once you have your screwdriver ready, follow these three steps:

  1. With the door open, locate the striker plate and use your screwdriver to remove all four screws.
  2. Adjust the striker plate inward or outward depending on your needs. You will see small arrows at the top and bottom of the plate as a helpful alignment guide.
  3. Once the striker plate is adjusted accordingly, re-tighten the screws back into place to secure it.

Not sure where to start? Not to worry! We’ve got you covered with a handy tutorial by Lionel, one of our Area Sales Managers. We are confident that by following these simple steps, you will be able to successfully adjust your door’s striker plate in no time.
